Time Warner Cable’s NY1 News Channel Uses MediaSite Technology to Offer Searchable Video on the Web

NEW YORK -- September 14, 1999 -- Time Warner Cable today announced that its NY1 news channel is now offering advanced video search over the web using products and services from leading Internet video search company MediaSite, Inc. (formerly ISLIP Media). The announcement was made as part of the unveiling of RoadRunner High-Speed Online™ service to New York City. MediaSite is one of several select New York City RoadRunner partners including Cisco, Microsoft, NY1, Outlook Technologies and Toshiba.

By accessing Time Warner Cable’s NY1 news website using MediaSite technology, Internet users will be able to search and view clips from NY1's vast news archives. They will also have the option of purchasing those clips using MediaSite’s V-commerce™ (video e-commerce) capabilities.

MediaSite search technology complements NY1’s existing Outlook services. MediaSite searchable video products use speech, language and image recognition technology to make video as searchable as text over the Internet. With MediaSite’s advanced video search engine, NY1 users can watch a single story, instead of an entire news program. Or, they can even play video from a specific point in the story. Features also include the ability to search and view video clips based on video transcripts, keywords or images within the video.

For example, an investor can now search for and watch only news video clips that mention companies in their stock portfolio. Searches can be restricted to current news, or can include stories from the past. And, if they want to purchase a copy of the clip, they can easily do so online using MediaSite V-commerce capabilities.

"With MediaSite’s advanced video search capabilities, we can offer our users the ability to watch the news they want, when they want," said Jeff Polikoff, director of operations, NY1. "And, with V-commerce capabilities, customers who want to purchase specific video clips, whether for use in video production or to have copies of a story that is of interest to them, can now easily do so on our website."

"Time Warner Cable in New York City is at the cutting edge of new media delivery," said Mark Juliano, president and CEO of MediaSite, Inc. "Just as Time Warner Cable RoadRunner services have delivered the power of high-speed Internet access to over 10 million homes in the US, the delivery of searchable NY1 news will expose a large group of users to the capabilities that searchable video technology can bring to the interactive viewing experience."

The Growth of Searchable TV on the Internet

The Internet is an increasingly important medium for customized video news and information delivery. Over 100 million streaming media players (software that allows users to watch video over the Internet) such as RealNetworks RealPlayer and Microsoft Windows Media Player are now installed on desktops with more added daily. With MediaSite’s advanced video search capabilities, users can search all of the video content on a website and watch only the video clips that are of interest to them.

"MediaSite offers a new, exciting feature that allows us to offer viewers services above and beyond merely watching video programming on the web," added Jeff Polikoff of NY1 News.
