Duquesne University to Offer
First Searchable Video Classes Over the Web
Partners with  Media to Build Advanced Internet Video Classes

Pittsburgh, PA—December 15, 1998—MediaSite, Inc., the leading developer and supplier of software, systems and services to create searchable, Web-based video and audio Media Sites for Intranets, Extranets and the Internet, today announced that Duquesne University's Masters Program in Multimedia Technology will use MediaSite software to offer the world's first fully searchable video courses over the Internet.

Today, the Multimedia program at Duquesne offers a leading distance learning program - offering video courses broadcast live over the Internet to registered students. These live Internet broadcasts include video footage of the professor lecturing as well as interactive "chat", where students and the professor can communicate by typing in questions and answers.

Currently, Internet classrooms offer no way for students to search and view these live broadcasts at a later time - for review of specific topics prior to exams, or even to review sessions or concepts that were missed. With   MediaSite software, Duquesne's Multimedia distance learning program takes the teaching capabilities of the Internet to the next level by allowing video to be segmented into video "clips" which can be searched by topic area.

With searchable video, Duquesne students will have the flexibility to search the entire database of sessions, based on topic, any time of the day or night. This flexibility makes the Duquesne program even more compelling, since Masters degree programs typically contain many working students. And, even students studying full-time can benefit by being able to review specific information in the same format that they originally received the information - video. For example, a student can query by topic, such as "Java Programming and Memory Management" and can then play the video "clips" that contain this information.

"The Internet has revolutionized both the business world and the field of education," commented Mark Juliano, president and CEO of MediaSite. "As the Internet continues to evolve, the use of video is allowing both corporate and educational information to be shared in ways not previously possible. With searchable video over the Internet, students at Duquesne will experience the next leap in technology, allowing them to relive their original learning experience by using our software to query and play only the specific information they need."

"One of the keys to our successful program in Multimedia is putting into practice the latest video and audio technologies as part of our curriculum," stated Dr. John Shepherd, director of the Multimedia program, Duquesne University. "With this new technology, we can enhance the learning experience by offering course programming that can be pre-recorded, edited and searched using natural English inquiries. In addition, we can also reach a broader audience of students via the Internet. We expect that this program will become a model for universities around the world, giving our students access to learning tools anytime and anywhere."

Applications of  MediaSite Media Management Software

The MediaSite System (tm) enables organizations to search and use video in ways they hadn't thought possible. By using the MediaSite System to build searchable video and audio Media Sites, news broadcasters can locate existing video clips quickly for re-airing. Film production companies can search film dailies from a remote location via a secure Extranet. Corporate customers can capture, re-use and share the strategic video-based knowledge that gives their organization a competitive advantage over their Intranet. Educational institutions can offer Web-based courses enabling students to review information by topic. Or, stock footage companies can offer searchable video over the Internet.

About Duquesne University's Multimedia Program

The Multimedia masters program at Duquesne is one of less than five in the Untied States. Students from all over the world specialize in Web design and management, instructional design, animation or multimedia development. Technology, principles, management skills and software applications are all blended into a practical portfolio that enables students to be employed in a variety of creative and technical areas.

Starting this year, students were able to take courses over the Internet, as those courses were being taught. The next logical step was to archive those lectures and make them searchable, a dream that can now be realized with the MediaSite technologies.
