After the meeting in Davis' office during which he had promoted the
Cadets to Ensigns Triss went back to her quarters and stayed there.
She was sick of the hostile and downright paranoid feelings she was
getting from Ta'ra and Atlanta. They were darn near overwhelming and
Triss resolved to stay out of their way until she knew a little more
about them.
To further learn about the ship and remaining crew, Triss decided to
access the ships database, but when she tried she got an automated
message warning her that the ship would self-destruct if she continued.
Triss figured it was probably a ruse, since none of the remaining crew
had the rank or access codes for the destruct system, but since she
didn't know how to turn it off and it was really beginning to annoy
her, she decided to go find Steve or Ktryna.
Triss finally found Steve and had just begun to tell him about the
problem she was having when Ktryna walked up, clearing her throat to
get their attention.
<<begin section from Ktryna's log>>
She walked up and coughed to get their attention. "I managed to get
the main computer in security back online. It seems the crew’s
distrust runs deep. One of them, most likely Dach rigged it so any
access would send a message warning that the ship would self destruct.
The routine was easily altered. And I locked out access to the
security area and armory to anyone but me. You don’t want me attacking
again… well…I don’t like the idea of anyone of them having access to
the armory at the moment."
Commander Davis asked if that was a prudent idea under the
circumstances… To which Ktryna quickly snapped.
"If distrust and fear were not so rampant…then I would not have done
so…I am tired of being treated like the enemy….as if we were no better
than the natives. Trust works both ways. Until they can show they can
be trusted ..and are not so quick tempered and hostile… they will not
get my trust. It’s a two way street. You would think if they truly
wanted to get home, they would at least meet us half way…after all we
didn’t come at them with phasers drawn…it was the other way around.
For all we know they could be responsible for the ship being here in
the first place…they could have mutinied…who’s here to say otherwise.?"
Ktryna waited for a reply before continuing.
"I’m sorry, but as far as I’m concerned...we’re still part of an away
team..and as such your security is my priority….between the hostility
demonstrated by this crew….and the natives outside…..well neither of
you are in the safest place in either situation. The natives are
drawing near to the ship…I’ve sensed them approaching for the last few
hours….their curiosity is getting the better of them and I would not be
surprised if they attempted to force those doors tonite…..until we are
off this planet…I will not drop my guard."
With that said she turned and began to walk away.
<<end section>>
Triss reached out and grabbed Ktryna's arm as she started to walk away.
"Ktryna, I understand your concerns and believe me, I share them.
Those two are far too paranoid for my liking and they worry me.
Especially Dach, whom I fear could become violent. I'd like to talk to
you later either today or tomorrow when you have time. About this
situation and some other things."
Ktryna nodded slowly. "Alright, tomorrow then. I'd like to get some
more work done today." Triss let go of Ktryna's arm and nodded.
"Tomorrow then." Ktryna turned and walked back down the hall.
Steve looked at Triss. "Now what was it you needed?" Triss
smiled.
"Actually Ktryna fixed it. I was trying to access the medical and
psych files of the crew and I kept getting that damn 'Self Destruct'
message." Steve nodded. "When you finish reading through the
psych
files, please tell me what you think." Triss nodded. "I
will." Then
she headed back to her quarters and the files.
~Several hours later~
Triss finally read the last portion of files that she'd been able to
salvage and yawned. She stretched in her chair and winced as she heard
several vertebrae pop back into place. She sighed and walked over to
the replicator, ordering up some mint tea, which she sipped as she
walked around the room. Triss doubted she'd be able to get much sleep
tonight in these quarters. The thought that the previous owner had
died on the ship was rather unnerving, to say the least. She set the
cup of tea down and sent out a thought to Steve... {{Imzadi...are you
still awake?}}
The first thing she got from him was rather confused. {{??}} Then
came something slightly more coherent and Triss chuckled to herself,
thinking he probably hadn't realized that she'd still be able to
communicate telepathically with him. {{Triss?!?}} Triss let some of
her amusement color her mind voice. {{Yes...it's me. Would you mind
if I joined you in your quarters? After all that's been happening,
being in these quarters alone is kind-of creeping me out...}} Triss
could all but see Steve smiling as he answered. {{Then by all means
join me.}}
Triss slipped out of her quarters and quietly went to Davis' quarters.
She was wearing shorts an a t-shirt and her bare feet made no sound on
the floor in the corridor. She was quite relieved when she got to
Steve's quarters and the door opened. She walked inside and into his
arms. Steve hugged her close, stroking her hair. "What is it
Triss?"
Triss took a long, deep breath. "This whole situation has me all
worked up. I think the paranoia on this ship is catching." Steve
chuckled. "Alright. So tell me, what did you find out about Dach and
Jade?"
