The last thing Triss remembered before the red and black portal

engulfed them all was saying "What in Heaven have you done?!" to

the

Nharwek scientist. Then there was an aching sensation of absolute

nothingness, then the bone jarring re-entry into what she assumed was

normality. She blinked her eyes and groaned involuntarily, seeing the

sand, and sat up coughing to clear her lungs.

{{Great,}} she thought. {{A desert. Brings back *lovely* memories of

the Vulcan mission...}}

Triss looked around and saw Steve and Ktryna, but no one else from the

away team. She hoped that since the others hadn't been near the

science lab they'd escaped being engulfed by the portal. She fought

back the nausea she was feeling and slowly stood, wincing at the

brightness of the sun.

"I would've thought you could've landed us better Steve..." she

joked

as she walked over, dusting herself off. Then she looked around,

shading her eyes with her hand. "I wonder where we are..." she

said.

Steve shrugged and tried to contact the Intrepid, but all he got was

static. "This wasn't what I meant when I said I needed a break

Steve,"

Triss said. He chuckled and said something about this not being his

idea of paradise either. Then Ktryna went to scout around a bit.

Triss knelt down by the stream near Steve and splashed some water onto

her face with a sigh. "You okay?" he asked her. She gave him a

half-smile. "Aside from the fact that I feel like I've been drug

face-down through seven of the deepest hells from any given religions,

yeah...I guess so."

Steve chuckled. "Still have that headache huh?"

She nodded. "Yes. And to make things worse, it's not the kind of

headache you can take something for. It's more of a mental headache

than a physical one."

"I won't pretend to understand how that feels," Steve replied.

Triss was about to say something else, but before she could Ktryna came

back with her report of approaching people. "I agree, we should move.

There must be at least *something* around here we can use for cover."

As they headed toward the dark area against the horizon, Triss wondered

what is was.  {{Maybe trees...}} she thought.  {{Or mountains...}}

They'd find out when they got closer.
